For nightlife, St. Maarten offers over ten exciting casinos with world-class gaming and entertainment. When the sun goes down, eat, drink, and dance at Little Bay, or step out for a lively night on the town. Today, Philipsburg combines its historical legacy with 20th century excitement. Its waterfront has become a popular stop for cruise ships, and the town's many restaurants, cafes and night clubs offer entertainment well into the night. Both sides of the island provide that endorphin rush of dancing to a great DJ's mix. A few tragically trendy spots exhibit 'tude, but fashion fascism is generally out, the better to sweat to the throbbing beat. The action usually starts at 10pm (though the beachfront discos throw afternoon theme parties). Then there are the regular community jump-ups. Friday nights, the Philipsburg boardwalk along Front Street percolates with activity, as does Marigot's waterfront market Wednesdays and Sundays in season. Tuesdays from January to May, the "Mardi de Grand Case" (aka Harmony Night) explodes with color and sound: brass or steel drum bands, dancers, street performers, local crafts booths, and mouth- (and eye-) watering barbecue. The late-night nexus of Maho Village is transformed weekends by scantily clad acrobats, fire-eaters, and belly dancers (earning a symphony of honks from passing Hell's Angels and wolf whistles from overgrown South Park brat-ernities). The Dutch side in particular resembles perpetual spring break where party animals will find plenty of zoos to their liking.
